Everyone has a different idea of what hell is. Maybe we should look for the most commonly held belief, among those who study it -- theologians and saints, two categories which can overlap but often don’t.
Search the web for “Four Views of Hell.” Surprise! Many books! [1]
God is omnipotent and omnipresent, but we are not aware of His presence unless we seek Him.
The unredeemed can sense God’s presence, especially when overwhelmed by the beauty of His Creation. The starry sky, the Grand Canyon, a newborn baby – an awareness of “something awesome.” But not an awareness of God Himself.
When we are born anew in Christ, our senses are opened to perceive and recognize His presence.
Hell is the unawareness. Heaven is the awareness. All else is conjecture, albeit scripture can be made to vouchsafe it.
